HOME HARVEST
The single biggest contribution we can make to reducing our carbon footprint is to grow our own healthy and organic food.
Best of all, to do it we don’t have to return to a peasant Stone Age existence with a mess of fruit trees, chickens and herbs plonked any old how in a squawking farmyard of a garden that needs a lot of hard work every day – we can use smart permaculture design to create a system that flows with nature’s patterns and is tailored to our lifestyle: a beautiful garden, abundant with food, which requires little input for great harvests.
By intelligently integrating all our elements according to permaculture principles, they do the work for us in their everyday interactions – our chooks scratch over and aerate the soil, eat pests and weeds, and add fertility. Carefully placed herbs and flowers repel pests with their fragrance or invite predator insects into the garden. Deciduous fruit trees can shade the house in summer, and allow in the winter sun, reducing our energy needs and increasing the comfort in our homes. Carefully shaped earth can direct water to exactly where plants need it, and the fertile soil, full of life, holds onto that moisture like a sponge.
